The Singapore Grand Prix takes place in the Marina Bay area of Singapore. Before it became part of the Formula 1 calendar, the Singapore Grand Prix was held as a Formula Libre event in the 1960s and 70s at the Thomson Road Circuit. It was first organised in 1961 and originally went by the name of the Orient Year Grand Prix. A year later it was renamed the Malaysian Grand Prix, a title it kept until Singapore attained its independence in 1965. The race was discontinued after 1973, no official reason was ever given although numerous rumours were cited. The more plausible of those involved an increase in traffic, the inconvenience of having to close roads, the fatal accidents during both the 1972 and 1973 races and a surge in oil prices following the 1973 oil crisis.
On it's resurrection in 2008 at the brand new Marina Bay Street Circuit, it became Formula One's first ever night race and was won by Spaniard Fernando Alonso. However this result has since been infamously tarnished by controversy and allegations of race-fixing that saw managing director Flavio Briatore leave the Renault F1 team. The night race conveniently facilitates European TV audiences and the race is illuminated by projectors that match the shape of the course.
