- About
- The Netherlands has an intimate relationship with water. This country is rich in inland seas, lakes and canals and a major part lies at or below sea level. Rotterdam is situated in the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland and is home to nearly 600.000 people and 167 different cultures. As trade and shipping increased in the course of history, the city of Rotterdam soon became the most urbanised area in the Netherlands and the largest harbour in Europe. People who live in Rotterdam feel involved with and strongly identify with their city. The Havenmuseum (Harbour Museum) plays an instrumental role in portraying Rotterdam's history. The museum is situated in the historical harbour of Rotterdam and traces the development of the harbour since 1850. Nowadays, the museum provides berths for historic commercial (sailing) vessels in the Oude haven (old harbour) of Rotterdam. This part of the city is open to the public. Visitors are given the opportunity to see and experience how ancient ships are maintained, repaired and restored.
