Tree trouble for Kimi

After a great start to his Arctic Lapland Rally, Kimi Räikkönen now has it all to do after crashing his Citroën C4 in Finland.

The 31-year-old was making terrific headway on day one of his debut event in the C4 WRC, lying in second place after the 11km Rantasipi Pohjanhovi/Mäntyvaara stage and trailing fellow Red Bull Citroën driver Dani Sordo by only 5.5s, but then the Finn lost control and left the road on the following 23km Aittajärvi stage, crashing into a tree.

Kimi and co-driver Kaj Lindstrom emerged unhurt, but 15 minutes' worth of lost time on the road and further time penalties incurred for the work that will be required to keep their Citroën in the rally leave the 2007 F1 world champion with a considerable task if he is to make a significant dent in what is now a 35-minute deficit on his previous lofty position.

There were no such dramas for Sordo as he tested his abilities on the snowy roads in preparation for the forthcoming WRC opener in Sweden. The Spaniard leads the rally by 26.1s after the first two stages.
