The tragic death of Japanese Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa overshadowed Dani Pedrosa's comfortable victory in the San Marino MotoGP at Misano, Italy.

Pedrosa claimed his second consecutive MotoGP win with the minimum of fuss after leading from pole position to the finish line to close the gap on overall leader Jorge Lorenzo who was second, with home favourite Valentino Rossi completing the podium and fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso in fourth.

However, the earlier tragic death of Tomizawa following a horrific crash involving Scott Redding and Alex De Angeles cast a shadow over Pedrosa's victory presentation, in which the flags of the winning nations were flown at half mast.

The MotoGP riders were informed of Tomizawa's death after the race and a sombre Pedrosa said: "It feels so strange, there is a big hole inside me. I was so happy and then I was told and this big hole opened up inside me."

Pedrosa's team-mate Dovizioso added: "You forget sometimes how easily something like this can happen. Sometimes our sport is just too dangerous,"
