In this week’s Red Bull Gaming Blog, Glen Ferris revs up with Red Bull X-Fighters 2012…
Red Bull X-Fighters 2012 – Review
If you’ve ever looked at a Red Bull X-Fighters live event and thought to yourself, ‘I could do that if I only had access to a souped-up bike and a world-class arena... and I possessed balls of steel’, well now you can live out your fantasies thanks to the all-new Red Bull X-Fighters 2012 mobile game.
The latest iteration of the top-selling title – available to download now for a very affordable price on iPhone, iPad and Android – improves upon it predecessor in every conceivable way, culminating in a game that somehow manages to evoke the thrill of a real-life X-Fighters tour in a device that fits into the palm of your hand.
The impressive update now features four modes of play – “Tournament”, a tour taking you through all six locations of the official Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2012; “Freestyle”, where the objective is to earn points by performing tricks during a pre-set time; “Arcade”, which gives you 30 seconds to reach a top score; and “Collector”, which challenges you to pick up a series of objects spread around the track in as little time as possible.
It’s this variety, coupled with a nice overall graphical touch-up and some rockin’ soundtracking from Red Bull Records’ very own Twin Atlantic, that makes Red Bull X-Fighters 2012 a very worthy investment.
The tilt-steering, touch-screen gameplay is set on the right side of challenging as you attempt to work your way up the rankings against Dany Torres and colleagues with only a steady hand and the requisite spatial awareness to steer you in the right direction.
Luckily, you also have some help from the Trickipedia, a handy little addition which tells you what screen swipe combinations will help you pull off the craziest flips known to man. Players can also increase their chances at glory as you unlock new driver suits and bikes in the Customize section, accessible after you accrue credits in Tournament mode (alternatively, you can buy additional credits in order to get your most wanted items).
Once you’ve got to grips with the task in hand, the Red Bull Media House and Polarbit AB collaboration now also lets you enter the “Challenge” format where you can record your runs and lay down the gauntlet to your Facebook friends to beat it.
It’s additions like this and the weekly, monthly and overall leaderboards showing the best national and worldwide players, that opens the game up to a worldwide level of competition. Tough, tense, exciting and enduring, this FMX sim is a real winner.
